SUMMARY:International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer
DESCRIPTION:This year International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer celebrates 35 years of the Vienna Convention and global ozone layer protection. \n\n\n\nThe ozone layer\, a fragile shield of gas\, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun\, thus helping preserve life on the planet. \n\n\n\nLife on Earth would not be possible without sunlight. But the energy emanating from the sun would be too much for life on Earth to thrive were it not for the ozone layer. This stratospheric layer shields Earth from most of the sun’s harmful ultraviolet radiation.  \n\n\n\nIn the late 1970s scientists discovered that humanity was creating a hole in this protective shield and raised the alarm. The hole – caused by ozone-depleting gases (ODSs) used in aerosols and cooling\, such as refrigerators and air-conditioners – was threatening to increase cases of skin cancer and cataracts\, and damage plants\, crops\, and ecosystems. \n\n\n\nIn 1985\, the world’s governments adopted the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer. Under the Convention’s Montreal Protocol\, governments\, scientists and industry worked together to cut out 99 per cent of all ozone-depleting substances. World Ozone Day\, held on September 16\, celebrates this achievement.  \n\n\n\nFor more information

SUMMARY:World Rhino Day
DESCRIPTION:Celebrated each year on September 22nd\, World Rhino Day is an opportunity to raise awareness of this critically endangered species. \n\n\n\nPoaching of rhinos for their horns and habitat loss are huge threats to both white and black rhinos. Most wild African rhinos are now found in just four countries: South Africa\, Namibia\, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Rhinos mainly roam grassland and open savannah. \n\n\n\nRhino poaching has soared over the past decade\, driven by demand for their horns\, mostly in Vietnam. Their horn is believed to have medicinal qualities by some people\, even though it’s just keratin.  \n\n\n\nSadly there are no ‘northern’ white rhinos left in the wild\, and only a handful in captivity. The ‘southern’ white rhino is a conservation success story as its population has bounced back from under a 100 in 1895 to over 20 000 in the wild today. As for the black rhino\, only 5000 are left in the wild today as they have suffered from wide-scale poaching.   \n\n\n\nRhinos are listed as Critically Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red list of Endangered species.  \n\n\n\nHashtag #WorldRhinoDay \n\n\n\nFor more information
