SUMMARY:United Nation Biodiversity Conference (COP15) - Part 2
DESCRIPTION:The fifteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) will review the achievement and delivery of the CBD’s Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020. \n\n\n\nOriginally scheduled to take place from 11 to 24 October 2021\, the United Nations Biodiversity Conference\, otherwise known as COP15\, has now been divided into two parts. \n\n\n\nThe first part helped to set the stage for the next meeting in Spring 2022\, with the adoption of the Kunming Declaration\, which calls on countries to negotiate and agree on the establishment of the Kunming Biodiversity Fund. \n\n\n\nThe second part will include an in-person meeting in Kunming\, China from 25th April to 8th May 2022. This meeting will “mark a major moment for global biodiversity with the adoption of the framework that will redefine our relationship with the natural environment”. It will include 21 targets and 10 milestones to be achieved by 2030\, with net improvement by 2050 – including the conservation and protection of at least 30% of the planet’s land and ocean. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:15th World Forestry Congress 2022
DESCRIPTION:Eliminating emissions from deforestation and promoting forest regrowth and landscape restoration could reduce global net emissions by up to 30 percent. Over the next decade\, forests could provide as much as 50 percent of the cost-effective mitigation available.  \n\n\n\nTaking place under the theme\, Building a Green\, Healthy and Resilient Future with Forests\, the World Forestry Congress will focus on six sub-themes\, including reversing forest loss\, sustainable use of nature-based solutions and forest resources\, and forest monitoring and data collection.   \n\n\n\nClick here for more information.

SUMMARY:World Bee Day
DESCRIPTION:To raise awareness of the importance of pollinators\, the threats they face and their contribution to sustainable development\, the United Nations designated 20 May as World Bee Day. \n\n\n\nBees and other pollinators\, such as butterflies\, bats and hummingbirds\, are increasingly under threat from human activities. Pollination is\, however\, a fundamental process for the survival of our ecosystems. Nearly 90% of the world’s wild flowering plant species depend\, entirely\, or at least in part\, on animal pollination\, along with more than 75% of the world’s food crops and 35% of global agricultural land. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security\, but they are key to conserving biodiversity. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor more information

SUMMARY:International Day for Biological Diversity
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations proclaimed May 22 The International Day for Biological Diversity (IDB) to increase understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues.  \n\n\n\nThe UN General Assembly adopted 22 May as International Day for Biological Diversity\, to commemorate the adoption of the text of the Convention on 22 May 1992 by the Nairobi Final Act of the Conference for the Adoption of the Agreed Text of the Convention on Biological Diversity. \n\n\n\nIn 2021\, the International Day for Biological Diversity is being celebrated under the theme “We’re part of the solution for nature”. The slogan was chosen to be a continuation of the momentum generated last year under the over-arching theme\, “Our solutions are in nature”\, which served as a reminder that biodiversity remains the answer to several sustainable development challenges. From nature-based solutions to climate\, health issues\, food and water security\, and sustainable livelihoods\, biodiversity is the foundation upon which we can build back better. \n\n\n\nFor more information.

SUMMARY:World Turtle Day
DESCRIPTION:World Turtle Day is an annual event that has been taking place since 2000. It was founded by American Tortoise Rescue. \n\n\n\nThe purpose of World Turtle Day is to educate people about the things that they can do to protect the habitats of turtle and tortoises. It is also a celebration of the joy that these reptiles bring to so many people on a daily basis. \n\n\n\nThe American Tortoise Rescue (ATR) is a nonprofit organisation established in 1990 for the protection of all species of turtles and tortoises\, is “shellebrating” its 21st World Turtle Day® on May 23\, 2021. \n\n\n\nATR created and launched WorldTurtleDay.org to increase respect for and knowledge about one of the world’s oldest creatures. Now observed around the globe\, turtle and tortoise lovers show their appreciation of the special day by taking “shellfies” and “shellebrating” with events and shares on social media. \n\n\n\nThis year’s theme “Turtles Rock!” encourages a worldwide audience to see turtles as more than just rocks with legs. The sentient beings are amazing creatures that outlasted dinosaurs and live 25 to 50 years or more. They feel happiness and pain\, show a true sense of humor\, as well as affection. \n\n\n\nFor more information

SUMMARY:United Nations Stockholm +50 Conference
DESCRIPTION:“Stockholm+50: a healthy planet for the prosperity of all – our responsibility\, our opportunity” \n\n\n\nThe United Nations Stockholm+50 is an international meeting convened by the United Nations General Assembly to be held in Stockholm\, Sweden from 2-3 June 2022. \n\n\n\nIt will commemorate the 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment\, which made the environment a pressing global issue for the first time. Some 122 countries attended\, and participants adopted a series of principles on the environment\, including the Stockholm Declaration and Action Plan for the Human Environment. The United Nations Environment Programme was created as a result of the conference.  \n\n\n\nNow\, 50 years after that Stockholm meeting\, the world faces a triple planetary crisis of climate change\, pollution and waste\, nature and biodiversity loss\, as well as other planetary ills that are affecting current and future prosperity and wellbeing. An unhealthy planet threatens human health\, prosperity\, equality and peace – as the world has seen only too clearly in COVID-19. It also threatens the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. \n\n\n\nSweden will host Stockholm+50\, with the support of Kenya. It will be during the same week as World Environment Day\, which is held on 5 June each year and is also a result of the 1972 event. \n\n\n\nStockholm+50 will be collaborative and multi-stakeholder in nature\, open to all participants who will be invited to share experiences and initiatives to protect the planet and contribute to sustainable and inclusive development\, including a sustainable recovery from the COVID -19 pandemic. \n\n\n\nThe meeting will comprise an opening segment\, four plenary meetings and three leadership dialogues\, and a closing segment. \n\n\n\nClick here for more information.
