SUMMARY:International Day of Forests
DESCRIPTION:International Day of Forests (IDF) is celebrated yearly on 21st of March in order to raise awareness of the importance of fall types of forests. \n\n\n\nThe United Nations Forum on Forests and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) are the official organisers of IDF. You visit their pages to discover their latests resources on sustainable forest management and restoration. \n\n\n\nForests restoration and the path to recovery and well-being\n\n\n\nThe theme for International Day of Forests 2021 is “Forest restoration: a path to recovery and well-being\,” which in turn fits into the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030); a call for the protection and revival of ecosystems around the world. \n\n\n\nForests are home to about 80% of the world’s terrestrial biodiversity\, with more that 60\,000 tree species. Yet despite the priceless ecological\, economic\, social and health benefits of forests\, global deforestation continues at an alarming rate. \n\n\n\nAround 1.6 billion people depend directly on forests for food\, shelter\, energy\, medicines and income. \n\n\n\nThe world is losing 10 million hectares of forest each year – about the size of Iceland – which accounts for 12 to 20 percent of the global greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. \n\n\n\nLand degradation affects almost 2 billion hectares – an area larger than South America. \n\n\n\nThe restoration and sustainable management of forests is important to help address the climate change and biodiversity loss crises. It also produces goods and services for sustainable development\, fostering an economic activity that creates jobs and improves lives. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhat can you do to help raise awareness of forests\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEvery year\, countries are encouraged to undertake local\, national and international efforts to organise activities involving forests and trees\, such as tree planting campaigns. \n\n\n\nThere are many ways in which you\, as an individual\, can mark the day. You can watch and share the International Day of Forests video 2021 (see below)\, you could organise or join events celebrating forests: tree-planting\, art exhibitions\, photo competitions etc. and or join the conversation on social media using the #IntlForestDay hashtag. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHappy International Day of Forests! \n\n\n\nFor more information.

SUMMARY:Earth Hour
DESCRIPTION:Launched by the WWF in 2007\, Earth Hour is one of the world’s largest grassroots movements for the environment. Held every year on the last Saturday of March\, Earth Hour engages millions of people\, in more than 180 countries across the world\, to switch off their lights to show support for our planet.  \n\n\n\nThe event aims to increase awareness and spark global conversations on protecting nature not only to combat the climate crisis\, but to ensure our own health\, happiness\, prosperity and even survival. \n\n\n\nNatural systems are vital for all our futures – and yet\, the rate of global loss of nature during the past 50 years is unprecedented in human history. Nature not only provides us food\, water\, clean air\, and other services worth over US$125 trillion a year – it is also one of our strongest allies against climate change. Protecting nature is one of the most immediate\, powerful\, and cost-effective solutions to the climate crisis. \n\n\n\nToday\, Earth Hour aims to increase awareness and spark global conversations on protecting nature not only to combat the climate crisis\, but to ensure our own health\, happiness\, prosperity and even survival. \n\n\n\nSo wherever you are in the world\, speak up for nature and don’t forget to switch off your lights this Saturday 27th of March at 8:30 pm\, local time. \n\n\n\nFor more information
